Please meet Max who was recently awarded the Postal Family Fund Apprenticeship bursary to support him with his heavy vehicle mechanic apprenticeship expenses. We spoke to Max’s postal worker mum, Heather about Max’s experience.
Max has always had a passion for cars and lorries and his long term goal is to have a career in the trade.
Why did you apply for the Postal Family Fund bursary?
Like many apprentices starting out, Max found it difficult to save for the essential tools he needs for his role while earning an apprenticeship wage. He has recently passed his driving test and now has his own car, but his insurance alone costs over £4,000, which he pays monthly. With these ongoing expenses, it was a real challenge for him to afford the tools required for his job.
As a single mum of two, working full time for Royal Mail for 26 years, I also found it difficult to contribute towards the cost of his tools alongside our everyday financial commitments. When I saw an advert on Robin about the apprenticeship bursary available to Royal Mail employees’ families, I decided to apply to see if Max might be eligible for some support to help ease the financial pressure.
What impact has the bursary had?
I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Postal Family Fund for awarding my son, Max, a bursary through the Apprenticeship scheme. This support has made a truly positive difference in his journey. The bursary has provided the essential tools and equipment Max needs to carry out his work effectively, giving him the best possible start in his chosen career.
It has also significantly eased the financial pressure on our family, allowing Max to focus fully on his training and development without worry. We are deeply thankful for this generosity and for the encouragement it represents. The bursary has not only supported Max’s present progress but has become an integral part of shaping his future career path.
What would you like to say to other postal workers thinking about applying for an apprenticeship bursary?
I would strongly recommend the Postal Family Fund bursary for apprentices to any colleagues considering support for their children. When I applied on behalf of Max, the process was straightforward and supportive from start to finish. He was successfully awarded funding, which helped cover the cost of essential tools for his job—an expense that can be a real barrier at the beginning of an Apprenticeship. The bursary made a meaningful difference, easing financial pressure and allowing him to focus fully on developing his skills and settling into his role. It’s a valuable opportunity that genuinely supports young people at a crucial stage in their careers.
