Postal Family Fund supports Jude’s Farrier Apprenticeship

Please meet Jude who was recently awarded the Postal Family Fund Apprenticeship bursary to support her with her farrier apprenticeship expenses.  We spoke to Jude’s postal worker mum, Nina about her achievements.

Ever since Jude can remember, she has wanted to work with horses. Jude started riding at 6 years old and realised at around 12 years old that she wanted to be a farrier to look after the horse from its most important part, from the ground up.

Why did you apply for the Postal Family Fund bursary?

There are no colleges which offer a farrier apprenticeship in Scotland. The nearest college offering this apprenticeship is Myercough Hall near Preston. However the main problem we have is that the Scottish government will not fund an apprenticeship outside of Scotland so Jude is having to meet all the costs herself. That is the course itself, accommodation costs, all the specialist tools, all PPE, full transportation to obviously very rural locations and competition attendance costs.

What impact has the bursary had?

Jude must attend college for 3 weeks at approximately 6 months intervals. The bursary payment has met almost the full amount for the accommodation costs she incurred when she last attended.

What would you like to say to other postal workers thinking about applying for a bursary?

I would highly recommend the Postal Family Fund because every little helps and its comforting to know  your work can contribute towards helping your family as well as you as an individual employee.
