Amy secures accountancy job after completing her university studies

Please meet Amy, who is starting work as a trainee accountant, after being funded through her three years of accountancy studies by the Postal Family Fund University bursary.  We spoke to Amy about her experience.

Why did you apply for your university course and the Postal Family Fund bursary?

I had applied to study accountancy at the University of Ulster as I knew I wanted to eventually become a Chartered Accountant, a role that has many diverse opportunities attached to it. With the opportunities to travel with work and meet new people being the most enticing. I chose this course as it allowed me to choose elements of my learning through different modules. It also allowed me to receive exemptions for further exams I must sit after university to become a Chartered Accountant.  I applied for the Postal Family Fund university bursary so that I would have the money to pay my university fees and to put towards textbooks, and travel to and from university.

What impact has the bursary had?

The bursary has had a major impact on my life. This bursary has reduced the financial challenges that come with university, allowing me to focus on my studies without having to take on further hours at work. It has also allowed me to spend my Sundays continuing to volunteer at my local charity shop, Barnardo’s. As this course is professionally accredited by the accounting bodies it has aided in my job search greatly.

What are your plans for the future?

In September I will be joining an accounting firm in Belfast to train to become a Chartered Accountant.

What would you like to say to postal workers thinking about applying for a university bursary?

Tara, Amy’s postal worker mum told us “Every year I reach out to colleagues whose children may be approaching university age to let them know about the Postal Family Fund and the benefits it brings to its applicants. We really appreciate that we were able to get the bursary for both our daughters. It has definitely helped them with their university life.”
