Please meet Saffron, who recently graduated from St Andrews in Computer Science, having been supported through her four years of studies by the Postal Family Fund University bursary.
Why did you decide to study Computer Science and apply for this bursary?
I applied for a place at the University of St Andrews to study Computer Science because I knew I really enjoyed programming, but my skills needed to be developed further in order to pursue this as a future career. I chose St Andrews because almost all of the modules have practical programming elements, and the department makes it easy to ask for help with studies. I knew that accommodation in St Andrews can be expensive, and that I could not receive financial assistance from my parents. Being successful in my application for this bursary meant I was not stressed about being able to afford living costs, and I could focus on my degree.
What impact has the bursary had?
The support I received from this bursary really helped me to focus on both my studies, and ensuring I had options for my future. Doing well on this course helped me to gain an internship, which improved my confidence and gave me an option to start as a graduate software engineer. However, I realised that I wanted to continue as a research student. I was very happy to receive a PhD offer and funding scholarship to study at the University of St Andrews researching Operating Systems.

I would certainly recommend the Postal Family Fund to any of my colleagues who have children who are considering going to higher education. The whole experience has been excellent. The communication and application process was straightforward and user-friendly. All queries were responded to very quickly. The grant itself was invaluable in helping ease financial pressures whilst studying. This made a significant contribution to her well being.
