Please meet Alfie, who is starting work as a vet, after being funded through his five years of veterinary studies by the Postal Family Fund University bursary.
Why did you apply for the Postal Family Fund bursary?
From a very young age I have always loved being around animals. I rescued two kittens who were seriously ill and did not have the best start in life, and two rabbits who had both been abandoned by their owners due to not being the ideal pet. I knew that I wanted to work with small animals and make their lives better. I applied to the Royal Veterinary College, University of London to do the BVetMed course to become a qualified veterinary.
What impact has the bursary had?
The bursary really helped me with travel and accommodation expenses for my clinical placements, which are a compulsory part of becoming a vet. Without this I would have really struggled to complete my studies. I am looking forward to starting my new job in September- with CVS Vets in Stevenage- working with small animals, which is a dream come true. In the future, I plan to specialise in emergency surgery for small animals.

Yes, I would highly recommend the Postal Family Fund to my colleagues as this bursary is a wonderful scheme that helps students who are struggling financially by taking a small amount of pressure off them. They are then able to concentrate on their studies without worrying about financial issues. It also allows them to participate in placement requirements that are all over the country, by helping with accommodation, travel and food.
