Please meet Robin, who will graduate in Physical Geography at Lancaster University this summer, after being funded through her three years of studies by the Postal Family Fund University bursary. We spoke to her about her experience.
Why did you apply for the Postal Family Fund bursary?
I chose this course because I have always had a strong interest in the natural world. This began at a young age, when my dad regularly took me bird watching (long before I really appreciated it!), and over time I developed a genuine love for nature and wildlife. I also really enjoy travelling, especially visiting natural environments, and I like being able to use my degree to be able to understand the physical processes that shape landscapes and ecosystems around the world.
I had been working since I was 15 in order to save up for university but the financial burden of this course was high due to the course requiring costly field trips across the country and abroad, which are of great importance to the course and excitement to me, yet not financially accessible.
What impact has the bursary had?
The bursary has had an important role in helping me complete my degree and make the most of the opportunities available to me at university. The financial support reduces pressure alongside my studies and allowed me to focus on my academic work and gain valuable practical experience. I am currently completing my dissertation and am predicted to achieve a first-class degree.
Completing the course has made it much easier to progress into employment straight out of my studies, as it helped me gain relevant experience and confirm my career aspirations. During my degree, it allowed me to work with ecological consultancies over the summer, which confirmed that ecology was the right path for me. These experiences allowed me to apply my academic knowledge in a practical setting.
What are your plans for the future?
I have secured a postgraduate role in ecological consultancy, which I will be starting later this year. Looking ahead, I am excited to progress my career in ecology and use my degree to continue exploring the natural world, while gaining hands on experience with wildlife and conservation projects.
What would you like to say to postal workers thinking about applying for a university bursary?
I would definitely recommend the Postal Family Fund to those around me. The support it provided made a real difference in helping me complete my degree and engage with the university experience. Knowing that support was available reduced a lot of financial pressure and allowed me to focus on my studies and future career.
