Please meet Amy, who is starting work as a trainee probation officer, after being funded through her three years of criminology studies by the Postal Family Fund University bursary. We spoke to her postal worker dad, Wyn, about her experience.
Why did you apply for the Postal Family Fund bursary?
Amy has always been interested in working in criminal justice and she had applied to study Criminology at John Moore’s University Liverpool. Her brother Liam was already at university doing a four-year integrated masters in Physics at University of Liverpool. I was informed by a colleague that he had been successful in securing the bursary for his children and thought it would be beneficial to support my children during their studying period away from home. I also applied for Liam, while he was in his second year at university. Both children had part time jobs- Liam as a kitchen worker at a local hotel and Amy as a waitress but private accommodation and living costs in Liverpool are so expensive.
What impact has the bursary had?
The bursary helped to cover significant living costs whilst at university in Liverpool. It allowed both to concentrate on their studies rather than additional work to pay for living essentials. Rent and day to day living has increased so much following the cost-of-living crisis and student loans remain the same. This hugely relieved the financial burden for us as a family as both Liam and Amy were in university at the same time. We are very grateful for this financial aid as both have now graduated and we are very proud parents.
What are Amy’s plans for the future?
Although Amy has only just graduated, she has already been accepted as a trainee probation officer and is pursuing a career in HMP probation service.
What would you like to say to postal workers thinking about applying for a university bursary?
I would definitely recommend the Postal Family Fund university bursary scheme as it benefited my family greatly. It would be nice for colleagues and their children to receive the same financial support and opportunities.
